Hazrat Omar and the Harpist

Many songs are unknown to the human ear
Our ears are to listen to human talk
Worldly affairs make the filthy, impure
A human cannot listen to a fairy’s song
Not knowing their secret language
Though they sing in the same world
Better than both is the heart’s song
The fairy and the human are prisoners
of foolishness: their sense of freedom
O’ the beginner, read Surah Rahman (1)
get acquainted with what fairies say
Get to the ayah of “Maashar’al Jinn” (2)
And comprehend “tastateeo” and “la tunfazu” (3)
What does the music of Awliya relate to?
O’ the part of something going to extinct (4)
Beware! recluse yourself of nothingness (5)
Negation of being is nothing but a delusion.
All of you who address life by logic
Your soul is neither born nor growing.
Awlia’s knowledge is of a different caliber
Find a mentor if you need to know more. (6)
If I may explain the meaning of songs
The dead would rise from their graves to listen (7)
Awlia bears the likens of Hazrat Israfeel (as)
Dead souls become alive with their speech.
This voice is different from others
The call of God blesses the being with life (8).
The voice of Allah is hidden and yet not (9).
It may bless you with a gift as He did to Maryam (ra)
The ultimate message is from God
Though uttered by the mouth of Awlia
I’m your Eye and Tongue, Allah told Them
I’m your perception, agreement, and displeasure
Be a person who listens and develops an insight (10)
You will become a secret and not just a possessor.

Notes

1) Surah Rahman (الرحمان) is the 55th chapter of the Qur’an.

2)Following is the 33rd Ayah of Surah Rahman:

يَٰمَعۡشَرَ ٱلۡجِنِّ وَٱلۡإِنسِ إِنِ ٱسۡتَطَعۡتُمۡ أَن تَنفُذُواْ مِنۡ أَقۡطَارِٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَٱنفُذُواْۚ لَا تَنفُذُونَ إِلَّا بِسُلۡطَٰنٖ

_”O company of jinn and mankind, if you are able to pass beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass. You will not pass except by authority [from Allah]” (55:33).

O’ jinn and men! If you truly intend to evade Divine Recompense and Chastisement, make an attempt to transcend the boundaries of the heavens and the earth and thereby leave the bounds of His Omnipotence. However, you may never embark upon the same, unless through Divine Might and such Might is not at your disposal. You may never evade the Tribunal of Divine Justice. Wherever you go, you shall be Divine Realm. Wherever you stand, it shall be His Sovereignty.”Click for details: Surah al-Rahman, Verses 33 – 55 |

Allah has set limits to everything, and they cannot surpass the those limits assigned to them, whether they are humans or jinns. It may further hint at the human scientific attempts to break the boundaries of earth and enter universe. previously this might was attributed to Jinns only; now humans can also enter free space. Is this the real freedom? Allah ushers the warning:

This is also about the Gathering when the angels, comprising seven lines in every direction, will surround the creatures. None of the creatures will be able to escape on that Day, ytiaLu 0) (except with authority), meaning, except with the commandment from Allah, Click for details: TAFSEER IBN KATHIR

3) In this ayah, أَن تَنفُذُو means to implement and ٱسۡتَطَعۡتُم means having capacity of and لا تستطيع means not capable of

4) معدوم amounting to nothingness, and that is not a whole in itself, but only a part.

Humans are reminded of the real value of their existence, they amount to nothingness before Allah the Almighty, so they ought not challenge His authority. The existence of human species is temporary and soon it is to vanish, so it is near nothingness.

5) A challenge posted to the philosophers of nihilism. Nihilism is a family of views within philosophy that rejects generally accepted or fundamental aspects of human existence, such as knowledge, morality, or meaning. Click for details

6) Mentor here means a Murshid (a Sufi Teacher) who guides the mentee (Mureed or Salik) to spiritual ascension.

7) Rumi is alluding to Zikr; it is so profound and lively that your listening would make dead souls alive.

8) Rumi is alluding to the “sur,” when blown by order of Allah on the Doom’s Day by the Angel Israfeel (as). All the dead will rise and line up for their accountability. The same purpose is served by the Awlia Allah during life in this transient world; by listening to them our sleeping souls can rise up and begin to grow and develop.

9) Allah’s voice is hidden to everyone except to those who have developed spiritual hearing like Awlia.

10) ويسمع is to listen and بى يبصرو  is to be insightful. Those who listen carefully can foresee many things. Hearing is from the ears, but listening is from the whole body. It is important in developing wisdom and intelligence.
