  1. Allah has said in Qur’an (62:5)
    “The similitude of those who were charged with the (obligations of the) Mosaic Law, but who subsequently failed in those (obligations), is that of a donkey that carries huge tomes (but understands them not). Evil is the similitude of people who falsify the Signs of Allah. and Allah guides not people who do wrong.”
    A man bonded to his deductive reason is like an animal: an animal is dependent upon its physical instincts for survival, and human beings upon their intellectual skills. An animal is unaware of Divine guidance; it has limited knowledge of instincts. But humans are powered by intellect and supported by Divine Guidance. Whenever, of their own free will, humans disregard the Divine Law and its role in life, they get disconnected and lose contact with its pure essence. Dr. Almaas describes this condition as alienation:

    A dog is always panting, and its tongue hanging out reflects its hunger or insatiation. Similarly, a worldly priest can never be satiated. Who is proud of his knowledge and does not submit before the Divine Law. Such scholars misled people and are the cause of their ruin and destruction. They distort and fabricate Divine Law, and Allah says:
    And well ye knew those amongst you who transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath: We said to them: “Be ye apes, despised and rejected,” 2:65.

  • Almaas has provided several reasons for the dissociation of the soul from its essence. The most noteworthy are:
  • Inadequacy of early holding environment
  • Caretakers narcissistic blindness
  • Extreme impressionability and malleability of the young soul
  • Nature of ego development related to the characteristics of the soul’s essence  
  • Animal potential of the soul
  • Congenital and accidental physical limitations
